  • PURPOSE:

To recognize the academic qualifications of certain administrative or staff members (other than academic deans and academic department heads) who may on occasion perform educational services, yet whose primary responsibilities do not involve teaching and research and who, therefore, are not eligible for tenure.

    ELIGIBILITY:

Individuals apparently qualified for a regular academic appointment whose primary responsibilities are other than academic and for whom such status is recommended by the appropriate dean.

    TITLE TO BE USED:

Academic appointments authorized under this policy should be consistent with non-tenure-line ranks and titles outlines in AC21 as follows:

    1. Affiliate (Teaching/Research/Clinical) Professor

    2. Affiliate Associate (Teaching/Research/Clinical) Professor

    3. Affiliate Assistant (Teaching/Research/Clinical) Professor

    4. Affiliate Instructor or Affiliate Lecturer

    APPROVAL AND APPOINTMENT:

Appointment to an affiliate faculty rank is made in an academic department, and must have the approval of the Department Head and the College Dean; for commonwealth campuses, the concurrence of the Chancellor and the Vice President for Commonwealth Campuses is also required.

    TENURE ELIGIBILITY:

Affiliate faculty appointments are not subject to the University's tenure regulations (AC23).

    REVIEW:

The appropriate academic officers are responsible for providing a regular review of affiliate faculty appointments to determine whether a continuation of the appointment is academically warranted.

    REMUNERATION:

The provisions of HR90, Extra Compensation for Exempt Staff Employees, apply to Affiliate Academic Appointments.
