PURPOSE:

The purpose of this Policy is to establish Fixed-Term II positions to cover graduate students under specific conditions. The position titles are"Graduate Lecturer/Researcher" and "Predoctoral Lecturer."

GRADUATE LECTURER/ RESEARCHER

REQUIREMENTS:

Graduate students teaching in the Summer Session and graduate students conducting research toward completion of their degree programs will have the special title of Graduate Lecturer/Researcher and will be appointed on Fixed-Term II contracts. Graduate Lecturers/Researchers can be appointed only during Summer Sessions and they will be expected to perform a teaching function or a research function equivalent to the teaching or research function of a Graduate Assistant during Fall and Spring Semesters. The Graduate Lecturer/Researcher must be formally admitted as a degree seeking student in a graduate program.

It is recommended that a Graduate Lecturer/Researcher be a graduate student who has completed at least one year of graduate training. Graduate Lecturers should have some teaching experience as a Graduate Assistant.

International students have additional requirements and their department (the one employing them) must check with the Office of International Students.

TUITION REMISSION:

Graduate Lecturers/Researchers who were appointed on teaching or research assistantships or graduate fellowships in the fall and spring semesters immediately preceding the summer during which tuition remission is sought may be eligible to receive Summer Tuition Assistance Program (STAP) funding for course work. Scheduled courses must meet the requirements outlined on the STAP application to be eligible for summer tuition assistance. Requests for summer tuition assistance for Graduate Lecturers/Researchers must be submitted through the individual’s college using the online STAP application. Graduate Lecturers/Researchers may be granted tuition remission for no more than five credits during the Summer Session. Graduate Lecturers/Researchers are not required to enroll for any credits unless they are first semester graduate students, or are required to be enrolled by their graduate program.

COMPENSATION:

Compensation for Graduate Lecturers/Researchers is negotiated between the graduate student and the program that hires him/her. The stipend tables for graduate assistants must be used as a guide to establish the level of compensation for comparable service.

PREDOCTORAL LECTURER

REQUIREMENTS:

Graduate students may be assigned responsibilities on Fixed Term II contracts and called Predoctoral Lecturers. This is reserved for a graduate student at the post-comprehensive level of training. This title may be assigned to a graduate student during any semester or Summer Session. Work assignments should be no greater than that of a 1/2-time graduate assistant. Course enrollment by the Predoctoral Lecturer should be limited to the 601 course designation.

International students have additional requirements and their department (the one employing them) must check with the Office of International Students.

COMPENSATION:

Compensation for Predoctoral Lecturers is negotiated between the graduate student and the program that hires him/her. The stipend tables for graduate assistants should be used as a guide to the level of compensation for comparable service. No tuition allowance or remission will be available for Predoctoral Lecturers.
